A Peaceful, RV-Friendly Guide from Suches, GA

Winter in the North Georgia Mountains is a season many travelers overlook—and that’s part of what makes it so special. As the crowds thin and the pace softens, the mountains reveal a quieter kind of beauty. Popular hiking trails are peaceful and parking is easier. Scenic drives invite you to slow down. Small towns feel welcoming, not busy. Restaurants and wineries are more relaxed. From our tucked-away corner of Suches, winter days are about simple adventures and cozy returns to camp.

Use Skeenah Creek Campground & Mill as Your Winter Basecamp

Suches sits right in the heart of North Georgia's outdoor playground and an easy drive to several cute mountain towns for winter wandering! Here are just a few:

  • Blue Ridge - Great for browsing local shops, enjoying a nice meal at one of the town's great restaurants and spending time exploring downtown without the crowds. 28 minutes from basecamp.
  • Blairsville - A quieter mountain town with access to parks, waterfalls and scenic drives. Great for sticking up or grabbing a bite to eat. 20 minutes from basecamp.
  • Dahlonega - The historic square feels especially charming in winter. Pair a stroll through town with nearby wineries for an easy half-day trip. One hour from basecamp.
  • Helen - For something a little different, Helen's alpine-style village is fun to explore during the slower winter months. One hour from basecamp.

At Skeenah, winter mornings are quiet. The creek runs year-round, the historic mill is part of everyday life here, and after exploring nearby towns, you can return to camp and relax.

From there, it’s an easy 0.2-mile walk to the swinging bridge, making this a great stop for all experience levels.

Sea Creek Falls
Located in the Coopers Creek Recreation Area, Sea Creek Falls is a 30-foot waterfall reached by a short, approximately 10-minute hike from the parking area. The entrance can be easy to miss—after turning left off Highway 60 across from Coopers Creek Store, continue about 2.9 miles and look for a small sign marking a left turn onto a dirt road. For the best views of the waterfall, follow the trail up the steep incline to the left of the wading pool. Use caution here, as the path is steep and can be slippery, especially during winter or after rain.

Scenic Winter Drives (No Traffic, Just Views)

Sometimes the best winter adventures happen right from the driver's seat.

Richard B Russell Scenic Highway
This scenic highway stretches for 23 miles and is beautiful year-round, but winter offers something extra. One standout reason to visit is the ice formations that often appear on the rock walls near Hogpen Gap. Be aware that the highway can experience temporary closures due to snow or ice, so it’s a good idea to check current road conditions before heading out.

The Suches Loop and Backroads
The winding roads around Suches are made for slow drives. Forest Service roads, quiet valleys and long views make this an ideal winter afternoon adventure. The lack of leaves will give you unobstructed, breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
